What is Fioricet?
Fioricet is a brand name for the Butalbital-Acetaminophen medication, an analgesic that is used to relieve tension-related pain. Its formula contains Acetaminophen (325 mg), butalbital (a barbiturate, 50 mg), and caffeine (40 mg). The FDA has advised the manufacturers to reduce the dosage of Acetaminophen to 300mg.
You can take Fioricet with or without in combination with other drugs. Fioricet is a barbiturate analgesic combination. You will find its generic versions in the United States.
When to use Fioricet?
Fioricet is a prescription pain reliever good for treating tension headaches and muscle contraction headaches. You can also use it to treat pain due to contractions. Doctors also prescribe it to treat migraines and other pain-related disorders. However, FDA has not approved it for the treatment of the former.
What is the mechanism of action?
Acetaminophen aids in the relief of headaches caused due to tension. Caffeine is known to stimulant the central nervous system. It relaxes the blood vessels of the stiff or tensed muscle to promote blood flow and enhance Acetaminophen’s effects.
Butalbital belongs to the class of medicines known as barbiturates. It is a sedative that reduces anxiety while also causing drowsiness and relaxation. It calms the muscular spasms that cause tension headaches.
If you are an adult, you can take 1-2 tablets every four hours as per requirement, with a maximum of six pills in a 24-hour period. One should not take Fioricet for an extended period because it can induce physical dependence. Inform your doctor if the medication appears to be less effective in alleviating your pain.
If you consume more than the advised dosage, you may notice some overdose symptoms, such as losing appetite, nausea, stomach pain, sweating, and weakness.
Later symptoms may include upper stomach pain, dark urine, and yellowing of the skin or whites of your eyes. Fioricet overdose can be lethal. Therefore, if you observe any of the above-mentioned symptoms, call for medical help immediately.
The tablet is consumed orally, with or without food, as advised by your doctor, with an interval of 4 hours.
If you are consuming Fioricet in liquid form, carefully measure the dose with a proper measuring cup/spoon. You should not use a regular spoon since you may not get the correct dose.
The dosage is determined by your medical condition, age, and treatment response. This drug works best when taken as soon as the first symptoms of a headache appear. If you wait until the headache has become unbearable, the medication may not be as effective.
There is so specific age limit to consume Fioricet. It is usually prescribed for adults between the ages of 18 to 60 years. The drug is not advised for use in children younger than 12 years of age. This is because there is no proof of its safety and effectiveness in this age group. It’s always better to consult your doctor before consumption.
Fioricet for Migraine
Fioricet is also commonly prescribed to treat migraine symptoms. However, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that it is useful for migraine attacks, especially when compared to safer alternatives. As mentioned earlier, Fioricet is prescribed off-label to treat migraine, and it is not FDA approved. Although Fioricet has been used for migraines for many years, this prescription has more hazards than benefits.
Perhaps, the reason for its consistent prescription to treat migraine may occur when other migraine therapy alternatives have failed. Fioricet is simply advised as a pain reliever and not a cure for migraine. If your doctor puts you on Fioricet for migraine issues, make sure he monitors you closely to avoid severe side effects.
Drug interactions are processes that might alter the way your prescription functions or put you at risk for dangerous adverse effects. When combined with sleep medication or medicines that make you drowsy or lower your breathing level, Fioricet can result in hazardous or life-threatening side effects. Before taking Fioricet for pain relief, check if your other medications are a sleeping pill, narcotic pain reliever, muscle relaxer, or medication for anxiety, depression, or seizures. It may also interfere with over-the-counter medications and vitamin supplements. If you are under any of the above medications, kindly consult your doctor before consuming Fioricet.
Some of the other medications that may interact with this drug include:
Sodium oxybate, phenothiazines, drugs that interact with liver enzymes such as antibiotics, including erythromycin, cimetidine, valproic acid, fluvoxamine, metaxalone, to name a few.
This drug may also increase the removal rate of other drugs in the bloodstream, such as if you’re also consuming doxycycline, felodipine, rilpivirine, voriconazole, or any blood thinners (warfarin) or beta-blockers, corticosteroids, etc.
As mentioned earlier, check labels of medicines you are consuming alongside Fioricet if it can cause drowsiness or if it contains caffeine. These may prove hazardous. You may avoid beverages that have caffeine in it.
Fioricet also renders birth control pills or other contraceptives less effective when taken alongside each other.
Due to various above-mentioned factors or simply due to the nature of the patient’s body, there may be mild to severe side effects after the consumption of Fioricet. Watch out for these symptoms and if they persist, call for medical help immediately.
The common, mild side effects include:
● shortness of breath,
● abdominal pain, and
● feeling intoxicated,
Other serious side effects may include:
● swelling of face, mouth or throat,
● difficulty breathing,
● suddenly appearing rash,

You should take Fioricet with some necessary precautions, especially when you are already on certain other medications. If you have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days, do not use Fioricet. It is possible that a hazardous drug interaction will occur. Isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine are all MAO inhibitors.
If you are allergic to acetaminophen, butalbital, or caffeine, have porphyria, or have recently used alcohol, sedatives, tranquillizers, or other narcotic drugs, do not take Fioricet.
In case you have a history of:
● Kidney disease, liver cirrhosis, alcohol addiction or consume more than two drinks a day;
